What we all thought would be 2 weeks of hunkering down at home for the greater good has turned into months on end with no mainstream medical answers for stopping the spread of this virus. Staying at home and social distancing didn’t stop the spread; the data from 14 different countries has shown us that a mask mandate won’t stop the spread; and with only 2.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people in the US, hospitals won’t be able to stem the tide, either.
People are desperate for answers, and turning to the statistics only brings up more questions. Approximately 80 percent of people who contract this virus experience only mild symptoms, and though the statistics are as clear as mud, it looks like at its worst, it’s fatal for less than 2 percent of the people who become infected. So what’s the problem with just opening up the country? The problem is the lack of hospital beds.
Countries like South Korea, where they have 12.3 hospital beds per 1,000 people, have been able to control the epidemic. But countries like Italy, where they have only 3.2 hospital beds per 1,000 people, the virus raged out of control, filling morgues beyond their capacity. This left their doctors in the incredibly difficult position of figuring out who to treat and who to let die. With only 2.8 hospital beds per 1,000 people here in the US, we’ve seen the same scenario play out like a nightmare in some of our biggest cities.
The bottom line in a situation as dire as a pandemic is this – it’s more crucial than ever that we take responsibility for our own health now because the medical care may not be available for us if we get sick. Now is the time to learn the natural alternatives that support our immunity and strengthen our bodies overall so we don’t get sick in the first place, or at a minimum, catch a very mild, manageable version of the virus that we can overcome on our own. I have 3 main science-backed strategies I use to fortify my immunity that I’m sharing with you today.
Vitamin C is one of the most effective, safe, and beneficial vitamins to help your immune system fight everything from the common cold to chronic and degenerative diseases. A deficiency in vitamin C results in scurvy, a disease characterized by poor wound healing, weak collagen-based structures, and impaired immunity. In fact, vitamin C deficiency is the 4th leading vitamin deficiency in the US.
More than half a century of research shows that vitamin C plays a key role in many aspects of the functioning of the immune system. This powerful antioxidant protects all of your cells from oxidative stress and strengthens the barrier function of the skin. It accumulates in immune cells and helps kill off microbes, while preventing tissue damage because of its role in collagen formation. Vitamin C is also involved in the cardiovascular response to severe infection and helps modulate the immune system and its overall response to infection.
Your body can’t make its own vitamin C – it has to come in through diet and supplementation. Supplementing with vitamin C appears to both prevent and treat respiratory and systemic infections, according to research published in the journal Nutrients in 2017. Because of the increased inflammatory response and metabolic demand during an infection, we have a much higher need for vitamin C when we are sick.
As I reported early on in this pandemic, China is doing promising research on the effect of high dose intravenous vitamin C given in the hospital during this pandemic. However, with our limited hospital resources here, I don’t see hospitals offering this option anytime in the near future. Instead, we need to supplement at home and keep our levels high so we have plenty in reserve to help our immune system fight infection if the need arises.
I recommend taking at least 2000 milligrams of vitamin C daily when you are feeling well, and going as high as your bowel tolerance allows when you are feeling ill. My vitamin C of choice is Vitality C from UNI KEY Health. This highly absorbable powder contains 4000 milligrams of vitamin C per scoop and utilizes four different metabolic pathways for you to get the highest dose possible without intestinal upset that is usually so common with other high dose vitamin C formulas.
Thanks to medications like hydroxychloroquine that need zinc to be effective against viral illnesses, this VIP mineral has gotten a lot of press. The truth is that zinc is one of the most important minerals to your immune system – whether you are taking a medication or not. Not only is it essential for wound healing and for the proper functioning of white blood cells, zinc has long been used and studied for its effectiveness in reducing the severity and length of viral illnesses. It does this by stopping the virus from replicating.
The best zinc supplementation I’ve found is Zinc Forte. It contains 50 milligrams of elemental zinc per capsule and is a proprietary blend of four forms of zinc, for optimum immune support. Even if you regularly supplement with zinc, I suggest having zinc lozenges on hand. At the first sign of symptoms, lie down and let the zinc lozenge dissolve at the back of your throat, where common cold viruses live en masse. Do this for up to 3 times daily.
With schools starting back in session and people returning to work, it seems inevitable that we will all be exposed to this virus just trying to live our daily lives. I, for one, have spent more than my fair share of time in airports and on planes just in the past few weeks. But unlike many, I feel complete peace when I have to be out in the community at-large, because of one key supplement I refuse to go anywhere without.
For decades now, I have taken Para-Key from UNI KEY Health whenever I travel. I have traveled extensively for years, spending countless hours on planes and other public transportation. We know that air travel is one of the main ways germs spread across the world, so I have to believe I’ve been exposed to all manner of contagious illnesses over the years – yet I’ve remained healthy through it all – despite being in a high risk population simply because of my age.
I give the credit for my continued excellent health to Para-Key. I simply won’t leave home without it and its time-tested combination of cranberry concentrate, grapefruit seed extract, pomegranate, peppermint, and sweet wormwood (a well-known microorganism eliminator).
I take it twice daily starting a few days before I leave on my trip, and continue taking it for at least a few days afterward. It’s also part of my seasonal detox and cleansing that I do to keep my colon healthy, and I’ve been taking it since the virus has hit so close to where I live. I recommend you do the same if you’ve been exposed to someone feeling unwell or work in a high-risk occupation.
