Healthy and Happy in My 60’s
Have more energy at any age
Recently, I was packing to move with the help of a good friend. She is just a year older than I am but was wondering why I have so much more energy at the end of the day. She has exercised regularly her whole life and has always eaten healthy food. I have done—and still do—those things too, but I may be even more vigilant than she is.
Exercise is Important
Exercise relieves stress! Look for opportunities to exercise on a daily basis, even if it is a 15 minute walk outside at lunchtime. Sunshine is so important for immunity, mood and bone health. Besides walking, get on the rebounder every morning for a few minutes, or do a few minutes of yoga. Activities in the morning gets your energy flowing for the whole day. Try to do yoga, dance or any choice activity at least 2-3 times a week.
A Careful Diet is Crucial
Most of what you eat should be fresh and organic. It’s good for the body, and what you see is what you get. When you do need to read labels, look for organic ingredients and minimal processing. Also check for names of ingredients that are masquerading as A-OK, like all the different names for sugar. Fructose is a sugar that is good in fruit but not when added as a sweetener. MSG is another additive that can be labeled many sneaky ways such as:
- calcium caseinate
- textured protein
- hydrolyzed vegetable protein
- yeast extract
It’s OK to have a sweet tooth and enjoy an occasional glass of wine, but generally try to avoid sugar. When indulging in a treat, observe the “4 bite rule” which is the philosophy that you can enjoy the sensual pleasure of any food in 4 bites. The first bite is delicious, the second bite is great, the third bite is good, the fourth bite is just mediocre. You can have the same memory and sensation as if you had eaten a huge serving, without actually eating a huge serving.
Establish a Healthy Regimen
For breakfast try a Fat Flush whey protein smoothie. It’s an easy way to get flax or fish oil and chia seeds. Flax oil helps with hormone balance, fish oil helps keep the heart healthy and chia seeds are very energizing. For a fabulous fall smoothie try this one with warm pumpkin! To make your own, take 8 ounces of hot green tea or chai tea, add protein powder, pumpkin, lots of cinnamon, flax or fish oil and chia seeds.
My Daily Routine
First in the morning, drink hot water with ½ lemon and ginger tea. Make the ginger tea by slicing fresh ginger root and boiling it until golden. This helps boost the immune system, helps with inflammation, balances pH, thins the bile and helps flush out toxins from the liver. Also try a scoop of probiotic every day, like Flora-Key, since gut health is extremely important for immunity and energy. Flora-Key’s 5 strains of bacteria are formulated to fight yeast, combat sinus stuffiness, and is great for gums and teeth.
Next, I do oil pulling for 20 minutes. This pulls bacteria from my mouth and even my organs. Each tooth is connected to an organ via the Acupuncture energy meridians. Also it’s the best way I’ve found to keep my teeth white, even though I drink green tea all day long.
There are a few supplements I would not go a day without. I start my day with Ultra H-3— I consider it my secret weapon that keeps me young and energized. It really helps with my mental focus. Being the oldest person at UNI KEY, it’s important to be at my mental best. I also need Ultra H-3 because it is constantly rejuvenating the cells in my whole body to prevent future problems.
In the morning I also take a few other supplements:
– Liver-Lovin Formula: Always a believer in eating a strong green food, like wheat grass or chlorophyll, I take Liver-Lovin Formula as my green food. It is very energizing because it contains chlorophyll which help oxygenate the blood as well support the liver.
– Sea buckthorn oil: A recent addition to my routine because it has an amazing combination of omegas and contains antioxidants galore.
– Adrenal Formula: Gives me all the building blocks to keep my adrenals repaired so I have lots of energy all day.
– Olivir: Sourced from olive leaf that is anti bacterial, anti viral and anti fungal to help my immunity.
I use the results from the Tissue Mineral Analysis to determine which vitamins and minerals I need to take with my meals for the rest of the day. I have done this test for 20 years and find that it has always been so helpful to keep me balanced and my metabolism on track.
Staying happy most of the time, even in challenging situations, is one of the things I focus on doing for my health. The Dalai Lama said “our purpose in life is to be happy.” I’m a ‘glass half full’ kind of person. I learned from my parents that I have a choice of which thoughts I dwell on, that our minds are very powerful— we believe what we tell ourselves. In tough situations I tell myself that “everything will work out.” Being positive becomes a natural habit. I also have a strong awareness and connection to my personal spirituality that helps me stay centered.
I’ve always maintained the philosophy that if we give our bodies the nutrients and support it needs, get rid of the harmful toxins, we can maintain middle age until we die. To quote my father, “I want to die healthy.”
