Get Fit: Zumba
How would you like to “party” yourself into shape? That’s what I do in Zumba class! 14 million people of all shapes, sizes and ages agree, as this dance-aerobic hybrid has caught on in more than 150 countries.
How Did It Start?
Zumba started 1986 when founder, Perez, forgot his tape of aerobics music for a class he was teaching. He took the tapes he had in his backpack—consisting of traditional salsa and merengue—and improvised a class using this non-traditional aerobics music. Spontaneously he created a new kind of dance-fitness, one that focused on letting the music move you, instead of counting reps over the music. After finding success in his native Columbia, he moved to the United States in 2001.
Many celebrities are also fans, including Jennifer Lopez, Halle Berry and Natalie Portman. I find it to be exhilarating, easy-to-follow, fat burning and toning for my muscles. I love the Latin-inspired rhythms and hip-hop routines. It even includes martial arts and belly dance moves.
Join the Party!
I go to my local gym a couple of nights a week, but classes are offered worldwide. Each class is an hour and, in that time, you can burn between 500-1000 calories! There are classes for all fitness levels including for kids and for seniors.
I suggest finding a class and give it a try. I couldn’t be happier that I did and have been enjoying it for the last 3 years. It adds to my joy and health!
