13 Food Trends for 2013

healthy eating trendsWarm weather is on it’s way, which means it’s almost time to start dusting off the “Summer Clothes” boxes! (Or are at least thinking about dusting them off.) That also means the thought of shorts, tank tops, sundresses…”the” bathing suit… is looming overhead.

Revamp Your Resolution

So, you swore to be healthier in 2013 for your resolution. How’s that been going? According to the New York Times, four out of five people who make New Years resolutions will break them. (I have been saving money by doing more DIY stuff, sprucin’ up at home. But the “vacuuming every week”? Um not so much.) Spring presents a 2nd chance, a fresh start. Isn’t that a good feeling?? If your first attempt failed, we’ll call that the warm up. Give it another go!

I recently stumbled across an article proclaiming the 13 hottest food trends of 2013. Funny thing is, for the most part, they’re simple ideas that should have been “hott” all along! Well, now they’re on a list and that makes it official.

Take a look at newly mainstream ideas in nutrition this year:

1. Balance. Simple idea, right? Seems like a no-brainer. A fair balance between carbs, protein, and fats provide you with a more even energy supply.

2. Not just another pill. If your stomach is Batman, digestive enzymes would be Robin. They aid in proper breakdown and digestion, improving your body’s ability to distribute and utilize the nutrients. Just be sure to find your real Robin and not an imposter with all kinds of fillers.

3. Plant-based diets rock! There are natural vitamins, minerals, and nutrients in plants that just can’t be replicated in a lab (which you shouldn’t be eating anyway) or even found in animal products. I’m not sure how much more “natural” nutrients can get than when it grows from the Earth. Just sayin’.

4. Diets go digital. We’re talking smart phones and their apps. There are all kinds of diet apps available right now; from tracking your calorie count, decoding food labels (that’s a helpful one), to digital Food Journals to help you track and analyze your intake. (Sidenote: Since we’re on the subject…we may or may not be working on a Fat Flush app! These little rascals are tough— but stay ready, we’ll keep you posted!)

5. Just Say No (to GMO)! Incase you haven’t heard all the buzz going on right now, genetically modified organisms (GMO) and genetically modified foods are plants or animals that have been genetically modified, go figure. These foods have been connected to a plethora of health problems, birth defects, food allergies, and more. Our bodies aren’t meant to try and process these modifications and it gets dangerous for our very well-being. In the past, no label was required to identify such foods, but a movement has started and food companies are listening— it has been projected that labeling will likely occur this year. (Win!)

6. Go organic. With the ruckus about the GMO and more people becoming aware of the dangers of pesticides to boot, organic is stepping into the limelight. Plus, organic greens and veggies are becoming easier to find frozen so the old argument about it spoiling before you have a chance to eat it? Gone.

7. Various variations of superfoods. It seems like every other week there is a newly anointed “superfood” (meaning it tags all the bases when it comes to your health). But this year, it seems people will be ready to accept that there isn’t just ONE superfood. Sure, blueberries are amazing. Chia seeds? Love ’em. Lemons? Of course! This year we may see some spreading of the superfood-love!

8. Fermentation. Don’t get scared—let me explain. Fermentation is “a process in which food is exposed to bacteria and yeast”. Like probiotics, the good bacteria beats out the bad bacteria and the result is a different flavor, texture, and smell. (Along with some healthy bacteria for your bod!) See? Not as scary as we thought!

9. Get all over alkaline. Foods that enable an alkaline pH in our digestive tract, improve our digestion…and improved digestion means? Healthy skin, flatter belly, and a healthy immune system. (Think root veggies, cruciferous veggies, leafy greens, garlic, cayenne and lemons.)

10. Spice of life. Seasonings and spices have been used since men were cooking over a fire in a cave. (Ever wonder who the first one was to say, “Hmm I wonder what this would taste like if I rubbed this red stuff all over it?” Cronk was no blockhead!) Besides adding dimension to your food’s flavor, spices also offer a laundry list of health benefits from antibiotic properties to internal cleansing. Try it! Sprinkle alittle somethin’ somethin’!

11. Eat it whole. Eating parts of foods is fine, but sometimes you have to wonder if you’re getting the total package of healthy goodness. Study upon study has shown that the human body does better when we consume whole foods, rather than pieces and parts. Hmmm, interesting.

12. Kids are people too! Maybe it’s time to feed them as such? Exposing kids to “real” foods not only gives them the full benefit of the foods, but also presents exposure and therefore acceptance to a variety of tastes and textures.

13. Qualified Qualitarian. You only have 1 body, and 1 life. The importance of what you fill them with is…pretty high. Becoming a Qualitarian means you examine your options and make a decision based on what the best quality is, what will benefit your body most.
